It is never too early to start teaching the basics of contact rugby in a fun and safe environment. Those involved in rugby know it is more than a sport; it teaches a number of social and emotional concepts such as courage, loyalty, sportsmanship, discipline and teamwork.
Within the under 11’s section we welcome boys and girls from school Year Six. We train every Sunday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am at Chobham rugby club, commencing on 1st September 2013 through to early May 2014. It is advised to arrive around 09.15 to walk to the training field and register. There is no need to pre-register, just turn up on the morning. We allow children to try out for up to three sessions before they are invited to join as a club member: membership details are available on the main website.
The focus in the under 11’s is all about teamwork and honing the core skills of contact rugby as we train. Sundays throughout the season are varied, our children enjoy a mixture of training sessions at our home ground, triangular fixtures with local teams and festivals. The festivals are split into 3 categories A, B and C to ensure children compete against others of a similar ability.
What to wear
The clubhouse does provide changing and showering facilities, however, most children find it easier to arrive changed in their training attire. In early September when the ground is still hard a pair of training shoes is sufficient. As the season progresses and the ground starts to get muddier you will need a pair of boots with metal studs. (Football studs are not permitted because they can be very sharp and cause unintended injuries)
Shorts are ideal while the weather remains warm; track pants are advisable when the winter weather sets in. A t/shirt may be fine early in the season if the weather remains warm. A Chobham club rugby shirt and full attire can be purchased from the club shop. Extra layers and a hat and gloves are essential on colder days. Parents don’t forget to wrap up as well!
What to bring
Children must bring a bottle of water as we take frequent water breaks Food, hot/cold drinks and a tuck shop is also available.
Coaching & Support
Chobham mini’s rugby coaching operates entirely on a volunteer basis. We are reliant on parents/guardians volunteering to assist in any way possible – in fact the session cannot operate without volunteers. This can include helping with the coaching, being a first aider, helping with registration and organisation on the day, social secretary etc.
Please note parents/guardians MUST remain pitch side with their children for the duration of the session.
