Chobham RFC value our referees and are committed to providing all our players with the best referees available. We aim to provide all our referees with many opportunities for continued learning and personal development.
As a new referee, you are advised to undertake the Entry Level Referee Award (ELRA), a three-stage award which will provide you with the key tools to referee competently. If you choose to join a regional referees society (London is our geographic one) then you will be required to complete all three stages of the ELRA. If you wish to simply remain within Chobham Rugby then you need only complete stages one and two. This is all contained within the first level course. These cover the following aspects of refereeing:
- Management and control
- Problem solving
- Refereeing the key phases of the game
- Positioning and communication
- Laws of the game
2014 saw a big step forward within Surrey with the formation of the Surrey referee Society which is dedicated to improving the skills and accrediting referees who are not Society referees but who regularly take on league and local friendly games. Through being mentored on a more local basis , new referees and, indeed experienced, can improve their skills and provide a better game management for the players and spectators alike.
The RFU and the London Society of Referees regularly run courses for both CPD and new entrants – details are available on the Referees Information Board in the clubhouse. If you are interested in refereeing at whatever level please in the first instance contact our Club Referee Coordinator Sean Wickes 07525 204099
