On a day where it rained non-stop, Chobham came to Esher on the back of a win from their last match. Esher retained their kick-off successfully and worked their way up the pitch through the forwards to score from the first play of the game. The fly half made an excellent conversion and Chobham were 7-0 down. However, Chobham won their kick-off this time and were able to win a penalty. Esher won the line out thanks to their 6-foot 9 player and managed to push Chobham back to the 5m line and then to cross the line for the second time. The conversion was unsuccessful this time. Already 12-0 down, Chobham switched their game heads on. Against all odds, Teo was lifted against the 6-foot 9 player in Esher’s lineout and managed to turn the ball over. Play was back and forth between teams for a while, with various scrums, lineouts and penalties for both sides due to the conditions. Ewen and Danny were able to give some great kicks for the wingers to chase, with the forwards pinning Esher in their own half several times. After an Esher kick, the ball came to Matt who ran over half the pitch fending off defenders. The ball was knocked on shortly after however. With five minutes until half time, Esher broke away down the wing and despite the player putting his foot in touch, they were able to score. The referee then decided that the player was in fact in touch so the try was disallowed.
Chobham were dominant from the start of the second half, but could not capitalise on a strong driving maul towards the line. The game was changed to uncontested scrums – this was unfortunate as Chobham had overridden Esher on several occasions. Esher then span the ball out wide and looked as if they were going to score if it weren’t for a tackle by Dan. At Chobham’s lineout, the 6-foot 9 player blatantly knocked the ball on, but this wasn’t noticed by the ref and led to another try. The score line did not put Chobham off, who charged up the pitch, winning a series of penalties resulting in a yellow card for Esher. Chobham could not finish it off again, despite excellent hands from the backs in tough conditions and strong runs from Alf and Billy in the forwards. Soon after, Chobham knocked the ball forward on the 5m line – the last opportunity before Esher kicked away, retained the ball and the full-time whistle blew. Several players put in key performances – tackles round the rucks from Harrison and Teo, strong defence from Andy and Ben and clean passing from Sammo and Jacob. In an even game on the whole, Chobham could not quite grasp the win.
